  • Eureka Rebellion

    When the Eureka Rebellion ended this gave all men the right to vote. The Rebellion stopped mining licences and reformed the parliament. Without voting the people of Australia would never have a say in Federation.
  • John West argues for Federation

    John West makes a statement in Tasmania and was published in Hobarts 'Colonial Times' and Sydney 'Morning Herald'. Congregationalist minister and Journalist John West Spread a argument that Australia should come together as a nation if we were to make a influence in London. This was one of the first mentions of federation.
  • Pro-federation conference

    A pro-Federation conference was held in Adelaide by the three Australian Chambers. The conference formed the Australian Federal Union.
  • Sir Henry Parkes speech

    Sir Henry Parkes makes a speech in Tenterfield about Federation. He was urging the governments of the colonies to form the National Government of Australia. He wanted everyone to unite and form a Australian Nation.
  • Australasian Federation Conference

    From the 6th-14th of February 1890, Melbourne the 13 leaders of the Australian and New Zealand colonies start to acknowledge Australia's growth in population and wealth. They agreed to a national convention to draw up a federal constitution.
  • First Constitutional Convention

    seven deligans from each colony and from NZ come together to from the first draft of the federal constitution. They agreed to come by the name of the Commonwealth of Australia. The draft constitution was finished and adopted on the 9th of April 1891.
    The whole Convention went from March to April.
  • 1890's depression

    People all over Australia were losing money and jobs this was a treble time for the making of Federation Many banks and properties collapse in Victoria making a economic depression for all of the colonies except for WA. Banks closed up british investment stopped and since all of the governments were tied up in the crisis the thought of immigration was forgotten.
  • Women get to vote in SA

    SA was the first colony to give women to right to vote and people in other colonies wanted this in their colony. Women also wanted a stand for parliament.
  • Federation meeting held by the AFL of VIC

    A federation meeting was held by the AFL (Australian Federation League) of VIC was held to address the premiere's of NSW and SA. An AFL of SA of formed the same year.
  • The constitution was framed

    The delegates of NSW, WA, SA, VIC and NT all attended the first meeting of the National Australasian Convention in Adelaide. The SA premire was elected the First President of Australia. They also framed the first Constitution 'Under the crown'. They used the draft constitution made in 1891 convention.
  • Third and final session of the National Australasia Convention.

    The last of the National Australasia Convention sessions is held in Melbourne. At this session the Delegates agree on a draft constitution.
  • SA,TAS and Vic say yes to federation.

    South Australia,Tasmania and Victoria agree to federate.

    The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution is approved my the British parliament.
  • Commonwealth of Australia Proclaimed

    Queen Victoria proclaimed that the Commonwealth of Australia including all six colonies will become existing on the 1st of Jan 1901
  • Lord Hopetoun Appointed Governor-General

    Lord Hopetoun appointed NSW governor Sir William Lyne as the premier of Australia.

    The Commonwealth of Australia is proclaimed at Centennial Park, Sydney on the 1st of Jan 1901.
  • The first federal election

    This election gave everyone including the Aboriginal people and women (in SA and WA) a chance to vote with the men for the lower parliament of the of their state.
  • The national flag is flown for the first time

    The Australian national flag is flown for the first time at the Melbourne Exhibition building. 32,823 entries were submitted for the design of the Australian Flag.
