  • Grey suggests a Federal system

    (No Date Found) Earl Grey, proposes a system where tariffs and customs were to be run by an assembly from all of Australia. But he abandons the attempt when he meets opposition from the colonies.
  • Henry Parkes Speach

    Henry Parkes, premier of New South Wales, makes his famous speech in Tenterfield. Henry Parkes' speech motivates the premiers and governors of the colonies to federate.

    ANA held a inter-colonial conference in Melbourne, Victoria
  • Australian League founded

    The Australian league aimed to get rid of the transportation of convicts and universal male suffragettes. It also aimed to establish a "Great Federal Republic of Australia."

    First Federation Conference

    The first conference on federation. Parkes and some other delegates draw up a draft constitution. Seven delegates from Australia and three from New Zealand choose the name "The Common wealth of Australia." Parkes also speaks about "One man one destiny."

    Corowa Conference

    The Corowa conference was attended by delegates from the AFL and the ANA. The result of this conference would be a referendum in which all the colonies would agree on. Henry Parkes and Alfred Deakin didn't attend the full event, but both did make some visits

    AFL of Victoria arrange another conference in Melbourne town hall. The premiers of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia went.

    Bathurst "Peoples Conference"

    The Bathurst conference was attended by 200 delegates that debated the opening of a senate, the 1991 draft constitution and that the Federation should be peoples Federation. There was also a woman organization that was established to help in Federation about that time.

    Constitution Framed

    The constitution held in Adelaide aimed to work towards a Federal constitution. SA premier Kingston is elected president and Barton, leader of the convention. They outlined a Constitution "under the crown" as a bill for action under the British parliament. All the states attended except Qld.

    Second National Australasian Convention

    The second National Australasian Convention makes 286 changes to the constitution bill. The delegates agreed on the basic representation in the senate, they also agreed on the power of the senate in regards of money bills, and provisions to break the deadlock in between houses.

    Last National Australasian Convention

    In the last National Australasian Convention, the delegates agreed on the constitution bill. The constitution bill was an amended version of the Draft Constitution. Australia became the second country in history to take a constitution bill to the power of the people and let them vote. Each colony said yes at the vote, WA came in later.

    The Premier Reid gave a yes and no speech saying that Federation was bad, but he would be voting for it anyway.

    Secret Premiers Conference

    The premiers host a conference in Melbourne. In this conference they agreed to change the Constitution bill to meet the needs and worries of Qld and NSW. The delegates decided that the capital city was to be in NSW wales but not too close to Sydney. Qld attended for the first time since 1895.
  • Delegates in London

    Australian delegates are invited to London. Joseph Chamberlain secretary of the states invites the Australian delegates to London, in hope that they would be able to negotiate the Constitution bill. The delegates are able to introduce the Constitution bill. NZ sends a delegate in hope of a clause that would allow them to join Federation later. Stephan Parker WA representative of the Government goes to argue for further changes to Federation.
  • The Commonwealth of Australia is Established

    The Proclamation of the Commonwealth of Australia is read out in Centennial Park, Sydney. Nine members of the interim federal ministry were sworn in with Edmund Barton as their prime-minister.
