Laws that blacks and whites were segregated. They can not be anywhere together. Blacks and whites can not go to the same park, school, restrurant and so on. Whites moved away from the city because blacks moved in. The Jim Crow Laws kept the blacks from having equal treatment of whites.

Thurgood was born in Maryland. He led the NAACP's efforts to end segregation was the top lawyer, Thurgood Marshall. Marshall orgued 32 cases before his carreer. Kennedy appointed thurgood to be a federal judge. He helped Maryland law school accept there first black student. Thurgood brought the Brown vs. board of education case to the court.

Martin was born in Atlantic, Georgia to a middle class family. He went to collage at Morehouse in Atlanta. He went to Boston University to finish his studies to be a minister. He also studied voice and piano. Martin got married to Corretta Scott . They were married in 1953. Martin was a leader because he said a famous speech for the civil rights movement. He believed in stressed non-violent methods. He led the March On Washington.

Many believed fighting for their country would make them equal citizens with equal rights. Well, it didn't. When blacks went to Europe they found a different world. There were blacks and whites mixed together everywhere. When they come home, they found America was still segregated. This was hard for them.

African Americans move north to help the war by getting jobs to help the job effort, also for better schools and jobs. They moved because there were alot of race riots in cities. African Americans came because of world war 11. They helped also by working in factories. About 1 million africans moved north.

Rosa Parks was an African American who lived in Montomery, Alabama. If a bus was crowded and white passengers needed a seat an African American had to stand and let the whites sit down. Rosa Parks was arrested on December 1, 1955 because she did not give up her seat to a white passenger.

In the fall of 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected president of the U.S. John promised to end racial discrimination. Kennedy won 70% of the African American vote.

On August 28 ,1963 250,000 people joined the March On Washington Street. It was organized by A.Phillip Randolph and Bayard Rustin. They organized this for jobs and freedom. A bunch of people like Martin Luther King Jr. spoke. It helped stop segregation.

President Jonhson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It banned unfair treatment. Also, they banned segregation in public places, so whites and blacks could go to the same park, restaurants and so on. Blacks could live peacfully in all areas of the community.
