Held in Illinos, tencially Douglas won the debate but Lincoln benefitted too. Lincoln got his name out and became well known after this debate.

John Brown was a radical abolitionist. When he went to Kansas he was a focal point of the violence that happened there. He attacked a government with about 20 other people. He was hoping other slaves would join him but almost no one did. He was soon captured and after a trial, hung.
