  • East India Company Rule

    East India Company Rule
    Administrated by Robert Clive. The East India Company forced Indian rulers to sign treaties, giving the company more and more power. The East India Company gained lots of wealth from India when the Muhgal emporer granted it the right to collect taxes.
  • The Sepoy Rebelion

    The Sepoy Rebelion
    Rumor were going around that the cartridges of their rifles were being greased with beef or pork fat. Cows were sacred to Hindus and Muslims were not allowed to touch pork. The sepoys also heard they were going to be sent over seas to fight. Hindus believed they would move down in the caste system if they traveled over seas. These events caused the sepoy rebelion. Eventually the British stopped the uprising.

    Gandhi wanted to express his beliefs through peaceful protest. Many joined Gandhi and took up his beliefs.
  • Formation of the Indian National Congress

    Formation of the Indian National Congress
    Indian groups were created to make a change. Some wanted to keep Hindu traditions, while others wanted to addapt new western traits. The most successful groups was the Indian National Congress. INC encouraged the British to open more government jobs to Indians.

    Formation of the Muslim League
    A Muslim group formed to keep Muslims and HIndus sepparate as tensions rose. The league was lead by Ali Jinnah.
  • Salt March

    Salt March
    Gandhi marched 200 miles to the Indian Ocean to make salt, aquiring over 50,000 followers along the way. At the time it was against the law for Indians to make salt. Gandhi and his many followers were arrested. Indian nationalists gained prominence.
  • Quit India Campaign

    Formed by Gandhi and other congress members when the Indian National Congress refused to support the war unless Britain promised immediate independence.
  • Hindu-Muslim Conflict

    Hindu-Muslim Conflict
    Divisions began to grow between the Muslim League and and the Hindu Congress party. Muslims wanted a sepparate nation. Muslims feared that they would not recieve equal rights since they were a minority to the Hindus. Gandhi encouraged peace during this tense time period.
  • Indian Independence Act

    Indian Independence Act
    The British granted India Independence when the Hindu - Muslim tensions grew and there became a risk of a civil war. This act ended British rule and divided the subcontinent into two sepparate nations. India for the Hindus and Pakistan for the Muslims.
  • Gandhi Assassinated

    Gandhi Assassinated
    Gandhi assassinated by a Hindu extremest that believes Gandhi betrayed the HIndus ('his own people'). Gandhi treated all religons as equals.
