Events 1850-1861

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe published a novel detailing the life of a slave, and the daily aspects of life slaves had to face living in the South. This novel essentially laid down the ground for the Civil War.
  • Bloody Kansas

    This was a conflict that involved aspects on whether Kansas should become a free state or a slave state. Thus resulting in the Kansas-Nebraska Act conducting of "popular sovereignty" where the settlers would choose whether or not they should allow Kansas to allow slaves.
  • Republican Party

    Anti-slavery Whigs has begun meeting in the upper midwestern states in order to discuss the formation of a new party.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    This was an act passed by the U.S Congress, in which it allowed the settlers within this territory to decide on whether or not to allow slavery. This act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which specifically prohibited slavery north of the 36'30.
  • Brooks-Summer Incident

    In the United States Senate, Brooks had beaten/attacked Charles Summer with a walking cane. Summer's injuries were very severe and his recovery took about 3yrs.
  • Election 1856

    This was the 18th quadrennial presidential election, it was a three way election between Democrat James Buchanan, Republican John C. Fremont, and Millard Fillmore, in which James Buchanan won.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott had went onto free territory along with his family, and master, where his master soon died, Scott then became a resident of the free territory, and declared that he should be a free man. Scott took this to the Supreme Court suing Mrs. Emmerson(master's widow).The Court later declared that African Americans aren't citizens, and had declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    This was the Second Constitution of Kansas Territory, in which was written by pro-slavery reporters. This had permitted slavery as well as excluding free blacks from living in the territory. This also declared that only men could vote.
  • House Divided Speech

    This was an address given by Lincoln before he was elected president, in Springfield Illinois.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    This was a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Party candidate for the United States Senate in Illinois, and incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas.
  • Harper's Ferry

    John Brown had led slaves to the territory of Canada, before being caught and sentenced to be hanged for his crime
  • John Brown

    Brown had led a raid at Harper's Ferry where he collected and freed slaves. He was then tried for his crimes and sentenced to be hanged.
  • Election 1860

    Lincoln defeated John C. Breckinridge as well as Stephen Douglas.
  • Secession

    Abraham Lincoln had won the election of 1860, and had caused tensions to rise, in which the secession of the South eventually led to the establishment of the confederacy.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address

    Lincoln gave this address and listed the many things he would abide by, while also listing many key points. Here he took his oath for his first term.
