  • Dred Scott

    Dred scott was the slave in the court case Scott v. Sanford who fought for his freedom. Scott lived in Illinois and Wisconsin which are both free states but was enslaved by an army surgeon . The courts sadly reversed the decision of his freedom because he was once a slave and was of African american dissent so he lost his right to citizenship.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    A novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe (abolitionist). wide popularity but the South felt this was a overly dramatized novel on slavery. This was written after the Fugitive Slave Law. It described the cruel truth to slavery.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    bill that mandated “popular sovereignty” this bill allowing settlers of a territory to decide whether slavery would be allowed within a new state’s borders.this bill was proposed by Stephen A. Douglas
  • Bloody Kansas

    Conflict between (1854-1861) period of violence during the settling of the Kansas territory.
  • Republican Party

    Contained former members of the whig party. oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories. Led to the divide between the North and South because of the demand of slavery being banned in all US territories.
  • Election of 1856

    Democrat James Buchanan defeated Republican John C. Frémont with 174 electoral votes to Frémont’s 114.
  • Brooks-Sumner Incident

    Senator Charles Sumner two day speech making fun of Senator Andrew Butler. Senator Brooks (South Carolina) beat Sumner up with a cane.this showed how much tension there was between countries.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Seven debates between the Democratic senator Stephen A. Douglas and Republican Abraham Lincoln about slavery extension into the territories. Missouri Compromise had settled this issue before but Mexican War brought up new issues.
  • House divided speech

    Abraham Lincoln gave a national address upon accepting the nomination of the Republican party for the US senator.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    Second constitution drafted for Kansas territory. written by slavery supporters. this permitted slaver except for free African Americans residing in Kansas. Not passed by Congress. Kansas was recognized as a free state
  • Harper's Ferry

    John Brown (Abolitionist) led a group of his supporters on a raid against a federal armory in Harper Ferry, Virginia. Brown wanted to start an armed slave revolt and destroy the institution of slavery.brown secured the help pf six prominent abolitionist ("secret six") rented a Maryland farm.
  • John Brown

    Abolitionist activist murdered for treason for Harper's Ferry. this raid was not successful
  • Election of 1860

    Lincoln won by 39 percent of the popular vote but won the majority electoral votes. he won against John Breckenridge, Stephen Douglas, and John Bell.
  • Succession

    A group of 6 states (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas) in the deep south joined the south and decided to leave the union. There 80% favored succession and 20% oppose succession. This brought about more conflict between the North and the South
