    Peace of Augsburg

    The peace treaty allowed for each German state prince to choose either Catholicism or Lutheranism as their official religion. It also allowed for people to leave their state for free if they disagreed with the choice. Emperor Charles V was the one to write the treaty.

    French Wars of Religion

    The French Wars of Religion was a period of time where the Huguenots and Catholics were fighting. As the Huguenots grew in popularity, the Catholics began to fight back. This ended with 8 different civil wars over the span of the 36 years of fighting. It ended with the Edict of Nantes.
  • Aug 24, 1572

    Bartholomew's Day Massacre

    The King of France ordered an assassination of all the Protestant leaders. When one of them survived, he left it to the Catholic administration to murder him. This went too far and Catholics began a widespread massacre of all the Huguenots. He tried to order them to stop but they ignored him.
  • Edict of Nantes

    This was a law written in order to end the Wars of Religion in France. In fact, the King of France actually changed religion. The law permitted the Protestants to worship in public and granted them full civil rights. It also established a court of both Protestants and Catholics to settle any conflicts that may have arisen.

    30 Years War

    The 30 years war was a religious conflict in Central Europe. It started as a battle between Protestant and Catholic states but ended up as a battle for who would reign as the more prominent religion in Europe. It ended with a series of treaties.
  • Treaty of Westphalia

    The Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1648, officially ending the 30 years war. It took 4 years for it to be drafted and agreed on before it was finally signed in 1648. It gave many countries independence and freedom and essentially vanquished the Roman Catholic Church.
