    Napoleon is able to overthrow the Directory. This is a French phrase called coup d'etat which means of sudden seizure of power such as Napoleon preformed.

    Napoleon decides that the key to building a better empire is expansion. He realizes that the key to success is taking control of Saint Domingue (now Haiti). This is so because sugar plantantions are an important produce at that time. But, his attempt fails where slaves are greatly angered and revolt against France's army. After Toussaint's death, a prominant leader wo helped Saint Domingue win several battles, Jean Jacques Dessalines (his lieutinant) finally wins independence in 1804.

    Padre Hidalgo, was a preist from a small town Delores. On September 16, 1810, Hidalgo rang the church bells signally all peasants come to the church. After gathering them, they issued a rebellion toward the Spanish. He was able to gather around 80,000 men. In 1811, the Spanish feard for their property, loss of property, and their lives so they fought backing defeating Hidalgo.

    Napoleon had his final battle in 1815 at Waterloo against the Duke of Wellington. During that day, it was raining. Altough both armies had equal amount of soldiers, Napoleon had horses. He decided taht the one way to apply this to his attack, was to wait out until the ground dried, so the horses will be able to run better. During this wait, the Duke calls in reinforcements, where Napoleon is outnumbered.
