    The same day Israel gained independence it was attacked by Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq's armies. However, Israel was more prepared than expected and bombed the Egyptian capital Cairo in July 1948. Howvever peace talks were arranged in the Arab Nations, Forces were withdrawn from Israel in 1949

    In 1953 the millitary Coup leader Muhammad Najib became president of Egypt. This was part of a seizure of government power in Egypt that proved to be very violent and illegal. Millitary forces removed the current leader in power and appointed Muhammad Najib. Howver, Najib was only in power for one year.

    Egypt seizes the Suez canal
    In 1956, President Gamal Abdel Nasser announced the nationalization of the Suez canal. However, British, French and Israeli forces joined in an alliance to attack and invade the canal. The Soviet Union also thretened to join the conflict on Egypts behalf. Howver the UN sought to resolve the confict and a ceasefire was called for.

    Treaty of Friendship between Egypt and the Soviet Union
    In 1971 a treaty was signed between the Soviet Union and Eqypt. The two countries worked together to cooperate with socialist forces to strengthen their states. This also benifitted the militaries of the country. This is evident in wars such as the Arab- Israeli war in which the USSR aided Egypt.

    In 1971 Egyot was renamed the Arab Republic of Egypt. A new constitution was also introduced. It focused on Islam and declared it the official language. It also legislated the presidential term to 6 years which would later be changed to four.

    Hosni Mubarak is approved as president
    In 1981 Mubarak was approved as president of Egypt. This presidency would last 30 years until 2011. He was appointed president when vice chairman of the National Democratic Party. He succeded the president at the time, Anwar Sadat after he was assasinated.

    Egypt rejoins the Arab Leauge
    In 1979, Egypt was suspended from that Arab Leauge because of reasons such as its recent peace treaty with Israel. In 1989 Egypt was however re admitted into the Arab Leauge. At the time, the leauge head quarters were located in Tunis. However, they were moved back to Cairo when Egypt rejoined the leauge.

    Foreign activists protest in Cairo
    In Decmber 2009 1,300 protesters gathered in Cairo against Egypt's refusal to let aid convoys into Gaza. Protesters came from 42 different countries to participate in the Gaza Freedom March. Activists were hoping to march into Gaza however were blocked by Egyptian athourity. The country offered to let only 100 activists into Gaza. Howver, the offter was declines by the frustrated protesters.

    After becoming president in 1981, Hosni Mubarak was sworn in to his fourth term of office in 1999. He stepped down from office in 2011.. As president, Mubarak survived 6 assasination attemps. When he stepped down in 2011 the millitary's supreme council was announced to rule the country

    Government declares Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group
    This December, Egypt responded to attacks and protest by the Muslim Brotherhood my declaring it a terrorist organization. The long establised group have comitted countless crimes, the latest being a bombing in Mansoura. Few supporters of the brotherhood were unaccpeting of the declaration. However, most people were supportive.
