Edward was born in Nyack, New York. He lived with his parents, Elizabeth Smith and Garret Hopper, and his sister, Marion Hopper.

At the age of 5, Edward started his studying drawing. His experience with ink, charcoal, watercolor, and oil, lead him to become a very productive young artist.

Edward joined the New York Institute of Art and Design to formalized his training in art. His professor, Robert Henri, encouraged him to paint with emotions and perspectives. Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas were also two impressionists that influenced Edward's work.

Edward was inspired by suburban landscapes when he traveled to Massachusetts. He sold his first painting, Sailing, in 1911. He continued to paint Parisian and New York urban scenes and explored watercolors in New England, painting beautiful nautical themes.

Edward married Josephine Nivison at age 42. They first meet at the New York Institute of Art and Design. She became his model and good luck charm for his paintings.

Edward died in Manhattan, New York, at age 84. His paintings are showcased in the Whitney Museum of American Art.
