The British North America Act officially took effect on this date and the Dominion of Canada was created. Macdonald was the one behind getting it passed as he brought the document to England. He also argued over its passing over there.

On March 20, 1869, the government of Sir John A Madonald purchased Rupert’s Land from the Hudson's Bay company for $1.5 million. Manitoba and Northwest territories were then created from the land. Over one third of Canada in present day was formed from Rupert's Land.

In the year of 1873, Alexander Mackenzie formed first Liberal administration of the Dominion of Canada.

In 1874, Mackenzie created the concept of Secret Ballot. Secret Ballot is contiuned on today as a part of elections in Canada.

In 1874, Mackenzie established the Royal Military College of Canada.

In 1875, Mackenzie found the Supreme Court of Canada. This insitution was very important to our country because all laws were made and passed here.

In 1878, Alexander Mackenzie found the Office of Auditor General in Canada. Its role in the Government of Canada is to hold the federal government and make it accountable for its managment of public funds.

In 1879, Macdonald introduced the tariff policy which was known as the NATIONAL POLICY. It was a system of protection of Canadian manufacturing by putting high tariffs on foreign imports, especially from the US.

In 1885, Macdonald was instrumental in the creation of Canada's first national park in present day Banff, Alberta.

The first passenger train went accross Canada in 1886. Its final stop was Port Moody. Since the railway was now completed. This fullfilled John A. Madonald's dream to bind the country from "sea to sea."

In 1903, Wilfrid Laurier began construction on a second Canadian transcontinental railway. This increased trade which strenghthened Canada's economy.

In 1905, Wilfrid created the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan which joined the confederation.

In 1909, Wilfrid established the Department of External Affairs of Canada. This department in the Government of Canada has responsibility for foreign policy, international trade promotion, and trade policy etc.

In 1910, Wilfrid passed The Naval Service Act, establishing a Canadian Navy.
