Early Foreign Affairs

  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    An official announcement made by George Washington that stated the United States would stay out of the war between Great Britain and France. It also prohibited any American getting involved in conflicts of any other nation.
  • XYZ Affair

    The name of an issue that delegates from the United States experienced when going to meet with France about their near-war efforts. Documents were released with XYZ being the three diplomats from France.
  • Convention of 1800

    The treaty convention between the United States and France that settled issues and actions brought up during the Quasi-War between the two countries.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The purchase of over 800,000 square miles of land that made the western United States boder extend past the Mississippi River. The United States paid less than 3 cents per acre for the land.
  • Embargo Act

    An act passed by congress that stopped trade with any nation. Later this act would be repealed and replaced with the Non-Intercourse act which just prohibited trade with Great Britain and France.

    A war between the United States and Great Britain that was a result of conflicts related to impressment and their support of Navtive American tribes opposing American expansions.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    A statement that said any acts of colonization of lands in the western United States would be seen as aggression and would require intervention by the US government.
