    The First Fleet
    There were 11 ships in the First Fleet. There were 696 convicts and some women gave birth on the ships. The First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on the 18th of January 1788. The crew members of the First Fleet decided not to settle in Botany Bay because the water supply and the soil were unsuitable.

    . On the 26th of January 1788 The First Fleet arrived at Port Jackson. It was a better place to settle in because the soil and the water supply was better there. Captain Arthur Phillip named Port Jackson Sydney Cove, after Lord Sydney who was a crew member who helped organise the voyage.

    The Gold Rush PART 2
    People from Australia came by horse. The people who slept over night used a tent or a little hut. Before the gold rushers, there was 44 soldiers and a handful of police to handle all of the miners. If the miners didn't have a licence there were fined $10, if caught again they were fined $30, if caught again they were fined $60 etc. The food was very poor on the goldfields. Most people ate damper.

    Gold Rush means that one or two people find gold, then lots of people from around the world rushed to Australia to found gold themselves. In 1851 near Barthurst Edward Hargraves declared of payable gold. Gold was found in Ballarat eight months after Edward Hargraves found gold. Some people on the goldfields were ex-convicts, Polish soldiers, Dutch (troopers), Sly grog sellers and Australians. People came from all over the world. The people that were overseas came by ship.

    Some people caught their own food like fish, meat, etc. People usually used pans because they were easy to use. They also used a pickaxe, cradles, sluices, chinsels, dynamite, etc. In our days we have big mining companies that mine the gold.

    On the 3rd of December 1854 soldiers were sent to knock down the stockade. About 25 miners and a few soldiers died in the short battle. The result of the Eureka Stockade was that laws were changed to benefit the miners. Some miners were elected to the Victorian parliament. One of those elected miners who was Peter Lalor has a suburb named after him in Melbourne.
  • The Eureka Stockde

    The Eureka Stockade was a fortress built by miners at the Eureka Min in the Ballarat region who were demonstrating against government corruption and police brutality. On the 11th of November 1854, approximately 10,000 miners meet to demand the three miners to be freed and pardoned. At the second big meeting, on the 29th of November the miners showed their flag. It was the Eureka flag. It had blue with a whit cross and 5 stars representing the Southern Cross.
  • Ned Kelly's Life

    Ned Kelly was born in Victoria. His parents were John Kelly and Ellen Kelly. His dad was a farmer. At the age of 11 his dad died of dropsy, so Ned Kelly had to leave school. He was a notorious bushranger who's life of crime began at an early age. The crimes that he committed include stealing cattle and horses, assault of civilians, armed robbery and murder of police officers.

    . He had a gang of four known as the Kelly Gang who terrorised a whole town. One of the gang members was his brother Dan Kelly. Ned Kelly's final fight was with the police in the town Glenrowan in Victoria. In that fight Ned Kelly wore home-made armour made out of iron and was the only survivor out of the four gang members.

    He was only captured because he came back to get his brothers body but the police were there waiting for him and took fire at his leg. He was taken to the Melbourne Gaol and was hung there in 1880.
  • Australian Federation

    In 1860 there were 6 British colonies in Australia. The main laws for the colonies were made by the British parliament. The premier of New South Wales, Henry Parks talked to the other premiers about federation. The idea of Australia becoming a federation grew in popularity in the late 1800s. A constitution was drafted and accepted by the queen on the 19th of July 1900.

    Australia became a federation on the 1st of January 1901 with the colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania joining together to become Known as the Commonwealth of Australia. Western Australia joined the Commonwealth of Australia sometime later. The first prime minister of Australia was Edmund Barton (he was the premier of New South Wales). The meaning of federation is the joining of states to become one nation.
