The exact year and date of Douglass' birth are unknown, but in his later years he choose to celebrate it on feb 14th. He was seperated from his mother at a early age. Douglass does not no who his father is. But he was told it was most likely his mothers master a white man

At age 7 he was sent to work for a family in Baltimore where he lived for 4 or 5 years. He and other slaves thought it was a great thing to go to Baltimore because few slaves were choose to leave the plantation

When Douglass was 12 Hugh auld wives Sophia started teaching Douglass the alphabet. But when Hugh found out he put a stop to it. Eventually Douglass started to teach himself. But he also tricked other people into teaching him.

In 1833, Thomas Auld took Douglass back from his son Hugh following a dispute. Thomas Auld sent Douglass to work for Edward Covey, who had a reputation as a slave-breaker. Covey’s constant abuse did nearly break the 16-year-old Douglass psychologically.

Frederick Douglass tried to escape from slavery twice before he succeeded. He was assisted in his final attempt by Anna Murray, a free black woman in Baltimore with whom Douglass had fallen in love. On September 3, 1838, Douglass boarded a train to Havre de Grace, Maryland.

Once he had arrived, Douglass sent for Murray to meet him in New York. They married on September 15, 1838, adopting the married name of Johnson to disguise Douglass’ identity. Anna and Frederick settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts

He also subscribed to William Lloyd Garrison's weekly journal The Liberator. Eventually Douglass was asked to tell his story at abolitionist meetings, after which he became a regular anti-slavery lecturer.

Douglass published his first book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in 1845. The book was a bestseller in the United States and was translated into several European languages. He published two other books in his life time. My Bondage and My Freedom in 1855 and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass in 1881

In August of 1863, Douglass went to President Lincoln to urge equal pay for black soldiers. He made many trips back to the white house before he died

On August 19, 1864, Douglass returned to the White House at the President's request. Douglass was impressed that President Lincoln prolonged their conversation despite the arrival of Connecticut Governor William A. Cunningham.

In 1888, President benjamin harrison appointed Douglass minister resident and consul general to Haiti, the first free black republic in the Western Hemisphere

He died on February 20, 1895, in Washington, D.C. After attending a meeting of the National Council of Women. Douglass died of a heart attack.
