    Aborigines came to AUSTRALIA more than 600,000 years ago. They came in small boats like canoes. The ABORIGINES came to fish and find food. A T S I which means ABORIGINAL TORRES STRAIGHT ILSANDER, settled in AUSTRALIA making it their new home.

    Zheng He was a Chinese explorer who may have come to Australia in the 1400's. The Chinese sailed in fleets of ships called junks. There were usually headed to the Spice Islands to trade. Their ships may have sailed in the waters to the north of Australia. The Aboriginies told stories of people with golden skin.

    The only evidence that the Portuguese sailed in Australian waters was that the Portuguese maps shows the rocks and reefs of the Great Barrier Reef.

    Willem Janszoon was a Dutch sailor. He was the first European to land on Australian soil. He sailed in a ship called the Dyfken (Little Dove). He was searching for gold for the Dutch company the VOC. He reported that the country was full of savage, cruel, black barbarians who slew some of his crew.

    Hartog came in October 1616.Dirk Hartog was the second Dutch vessel to land on the continent.In August1616,Hartog left the cape of good hop at the sothen tip of Africa.

    Able Tasman came in 1642 on his 2nd voyage. He brought 2 ships 1 called ENGEL and the 2nd called GRACHT. Tasman was sent back to try to make contact wit indegineous Australians.
    Tasman could not find his way throught TORRES STRAIGHT to get to the east coast of AUSTRALIA.

    In the 1650's the Makassan's came to Austraila in small boats called praus.The small boat could only hold 30 crow.they came here to fish for sea cucmber. So they could sell it to the chinese. The Makassaaaan's traded clothes,tobacco,axes, knives, rice and gin with Indigenous Australians.

    JAMES COOK came to map the east coast of AUSTRALIA between 1768 and 1771. COOK arrived in a ship called ENDEVOUR. COOK was hired to calculate the distance from VENUS to the SUN.
    COOK had both hostile and peaceful meetings with the INDIGNEOUS AUSTRALIANS.
