  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    The Proclamation of Neutrality was authorized by George Washington on April 22, 1793 and stated that the US would take no part in a war between two or more other powers, specifically France and Great Britain. It also threatened legal proceedings against any American citizen giving assistance to any country at war. The military force was too small to help out any nation besides America.
  • XYZ Affair

    The XYZ Affair was a series of diplomatic events that involved the U.S. and France during the late 1790s it resulted in an undeclared war known as the Quasi-War.The French were infuriated by Jay’s Treaty between Great Britain and the U.S. and they felt that it was leaving them out as a country.
  • Convention of 1800

    The Convention of 1800 also known as the Treaty of Mortefontaine ended the Quasi-War between France and the United States. At this convention, France agreed to return captured American ships, while the United States agreed to compensate its citizens for $20 million damages inflicted by France on American shipping. The Convention ended the alliance between France and the United States that had begun during the Revolution.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal between the United States and France, in which the U.S. acquired approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River. This doubled the size of the young republic.
  • Embargo Act

    The Embargo Act was a law passed by the United State Congress and signed by President Thomas Jefferson on December 22, 1807. It prohibited American ships from trading in all foreign ports. It set provisions like, there would be an embargo on all American merchant ships, prohibiting foreign trade and American ships would not receive permission to sail to foreign port.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was an armed conflict between the United States and the British Empire. Due to British attempts to restrict U.S. trade, the Royal Navy’s imprisonment of American seamen and America’s desire to expand its territory the War of 1812 began. During the war, both sides suffered many losses and even the White House was burned down in 1814. The war officially ended on February 17, 1815 when US Congress ratified the Treaty of Ghent.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed by British and American representatives at Ghent, Belgium, ending the War of 1812.The treaty stated that, all conquered territory was to be returned, and commissions were planned to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was a U.S. policy toward the Western Hemisphere. It was hidden in a routine annual message delivered to Congress by President James Monroe in December 1823, the doctrine warned European nations and basically stated that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or monarchs. They wanted European powers to no longer interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere.
