    As war broke out between France and Great Britain, President George Washington declared neutrality knowing that America could not yet afford to go to war.

    President John Adams sent delegation to France in order to peacefully negotiate the problem of French Capturing U.S. ships. The delegation was met by 3 low-level French officials that earned the name of X,Y,Z. The French officials tried to bribe the U.S. to which the Americans refused and the American people were infuriated.
  • Convention of 1800

    Convention of 1800
    Following impressment and the X,Y,Z Affair, President John Adams wanted to return peace between the U.S. and the French. The Convention of 1800 occurred for that purpose. The French and American officials met and peace was returned between the two.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase
    The U.S. purchased Louisiana from France, over 80,000 square miles of land, for $15 million and the size of the United States doubled.
  • Embargo Act

    Embargo Act
    President Thomas Jefferson stopped trade between the United States and France & Great Britain in this act which turned into an economic disaster for America. Foreign ships were still harassing American ships and the Embargo Act was Jefferson's effort to put a stop to it.

    War of 1812

    America and Great Britain fought for two years over impressment, where British soldiers were taking soldiers off of their ships and forcing them into British Navy Services. The war was ended by the signing of the Treaty of Ghent after America took the victory. This war became known as America's "second war for independence"

    Treaty of Ghent
    This treaty was signed by America and Great Britain to end the War of 1812. All conquered territories were released and the Great Lakes territory was opened for American expansion. This led to the Era of Good Feelings in America.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    The United States would not tolerate European intervention in the affairs of any independent nation in the Americas. This made it to where America was no longer open for further colonization. "Hands off the Western Hemisphere" was what the Monroe Doctrine was all about.
