Development of Growth in Georgia 1789-1840

    The Great Awakening

    Baptism and Methodist are the two largest religious groups in Georgia after the American Revolution and it spread across the state as the people moved west. The denominations became popular within the South due to The Great Awakening, which was a series of revivals that focused more on personal and inward religion than traditional.
  • The University of Georgia

    The oldest educational institution in Georgia, chartered by the Georgia General Assembly since 1785. UGA promotes a culture of leadership through the alumni, for example many graduates have served on the Georgia Supreme Court.
  • Cotton Gin

    A machine created by Eli Whitney that separated seeds from cotton. The invention had transformed agriculture in the South which deepened the need for slaves and plantations.

    Land Lottery System

    A method that was used to distribute land, white men, widows, and orphans were allowed to buy tickets that would determine what piece of land they were given. The system had increased not only how much land the population owned, but increased the people's ability to with hold slaves and become planters.
  • Railroads

    A new and efficient style of transportation that reduced the need for other ways such as stage coaches, horses, and boats ; important to the founding of the city Terminus ( Marthasville and Atlanta ). This development helped Georgia by the increase in cities and towns around the track attractrackting ( I know I spelt that wrong BUT IT WAS TO PUNNY NOT TO ) population. ( side note it was the mid 1830's)
