Development of Football

  • Move from Agricultural work

    The Industrial revolution began in 1790 this meant many people moved from the land to the town for work, even though they did this they did not have much free time
  • Sport in School

    When upper class children where sent to public schools they would have lots of free time as they would board there, they began to play sport and developed quickly as it was popular and well organised
  • Sheffield Fc formed

    The first ever football club, Sheffield Fc are formed. Also the Sheffield rules were created which they played under
  • The Football Association is formed

    The Football Association is founded in 1863, this is the first football association in the world and they create the 14 original rules.
  • The Goal Kick

    The goal kick is introduced so that there now is a boundary line, this means there are restrictions to where the game can be played.
  • The First International Match

    The first international match is played England and Scotland. The result was 0-0
  • Saturday Half Day

    This was introduced as factory owners realised a happy work force would be more effective so they gave them less working hours and they could spend more time playing sport
  • The Football Association Challenge Cup

    The FA Cup was created by Charles William Alcock. This is the oldest cup still in existance and runs every year giving teams the opportunity to compete for the trophy as well as the revenue available to earn.
  • The first recognised international match

    The first international match played recognised by Fifa. Like the first international match this was also a 0-0 draw between England and Scotland. This was the first of many matches played between nations and now there are many matches played as well as competitive tournaments that make it more competitive.
  • Offside Law Changed

    The offside law is changed so that an offside position is determined when the ball is played by a team-mate, rather than when it is received.
  • Sending Off

    Refrees are allowed to send players off for commiting certain fouls or offences, however they are not yet shown by the yellow and red cards this aids discpline in the game.
  • The Crossbar

    The cross bar is introduced instead of using tape to mark the top of the goals.
  • 90 Minute Matches

    The time of matches is set to 90 minutes, this meant that they game had a set time and it wouldnt go on and on.
  • Whistles

    Referees first use whistles so that they can call fouls and the players can identify that.
  • Floodlights

    The first match is played under electric floodlights so matches could be palyed in the dark and the ball would still be visible
  • Money is Introduced

    Clubs begin to charge to watch mates and players begin to get payed to play this started the ball rolling of players earing extremely high wages and big transfer fees.
  • 11 Players

    The amount of a team is now set to 11 players, that meant that it could now be more structured and by having less players it would be more clear and open.
  • The Irish Premiership

    The Irish Premiership is introduced, this is the top league on the Northern Irish football ladder, now there are mant teams and also leagues through all age levels in the country.
  • Nets

    There is a net used in the the goalposts for the first time so that it could be easier to determine if the ball was in the goal or wide.
  • Penalty

    Penalties are introduced, they were made punishment for fouls inside the box giving a goalscoring opportunity to the fouled team.
  • Assistant Referees

    The assiatant referees are introduced and are used as linesmen they are to help the referee.
  • Promotion and Relegation

    Automatic promotion and relegation is introduced by the Football League, there then wouldnt have to be playoffs between last placed teams from the divion above and teams were gauranteed to go up and down.
  • FIFA

    FIFA is formed to govern world football, they are responsible for running world football and are in charge of the 6 confederations.
  • The Players Football Association

    The PFA is formed, this is a source of help and advise for players throughout there career and also after it and also makes sure that the players know their rights and are treated correctly.
  • Goalkeepers Handball

    Goalkeepers are now only allowed to handle the ball inside their own box.
  • 10 Yard Rule

    Players must be standing 10 yards away from a free kick being taken.
  • First World War

    Players went into service and football was not played as much as a result.
  • Offside Rule Changed

    The offside rule is changed again. A player is now onside if a minimum of two, instead of three, opposing players are between him and the goal line.
  • Radio

    First match broadcast on national radio. It was the FA Cup Final with many people tuning in to listen for the first time, this has progressed over time into tv deals and now generates huge amounts of money for football clubs.
  • The First World Cup

    The First World Cup is held in Uruaguay with 13 teams entering, eventually it became the most viewed competition in the world. Now teams will prepare for world cups years in advance hoping they can develop a team that can bring the trophy home.
  • Final on TV

    The first FA Cup final shown live on BBC, now every final is shown live and the big networks compete for rights to show it.
  • Shirt Number

    All players had to have a shirt nmber whilst playing, this meant that the referee could easily identify players and also remeber players who had commited offences. This is also easier for commentators to identify players.
  • Second World War

    Players served their countries and there was a huge break in football with not much played and also no world cups as a result.
  • Dungannon Swifts

    Dungannon Swifts were formed.
  • Public Transport and cars

    This allowed more people to travel around the country for sport and develop popularity. Trains and cars meant that people could get to go to away matches or go to matches that they arent close to.
  • The White Ball

    The first white ball is used. Starting the evolution of the football to what it is today, this was less heavy than the leather balls previously used so could be kicked further.
  • The First European Cup

    The first time the European Cup was held and was won by Real Madrid, this has gone on to become a very poular and widely watched competition earing its competitors lots of money.
  • PE

    Sport has developed by increased PE. PE encourages developement in sport and also goves enjoyment from playing it. This is where people would have played most of their sport as they wernt as many clubs they could attend so this was the best way for them to attend. The curriculum for PE meant that they had to take part in this activity and they also got to play a number of sports.
  • Yellow and Red card

    The yellow and red cards are introduced for bookings and sendings off, this was to follow fouls and increase disciplne and fairness as there went as many fouls because the played could be dismissed.
  • Womens Football

    The first womens international match is played, this has increased the popularity in the womens game and it is now beggining to get more popular, it has increased to getting more time on tv and people can follow it closer.
  • The Premier League

    The Premier League is formed, this was to create more revenue for the teams as they could negotiate their own broadcast deals and make more money and could develop each team further, by partnering with Sky Sports they could imporve because of the revenue that they brought in with it.
  • Sky Sports

    Sky gain the rights to the premier league to show, this has developed the league immensly and the deal is now worth £1 billion per year. This was very critical to the clubs of the Premier league as it meant more revenue for them and that they would be bale to use this to develop and become more competitive with other big European clubs. This also meant more games would air live and viewers could watch more games and it increased the entertainment value of the sport.
  • Backpass

    The backpass rule is introudced, a goalkeeper cant pick up or catch a ball played directly by a fellow team member's foot, meaning that games would become more fair as goalkeepers couldnt waste as much time as they wanted if their team was winning.
  • Adidas Predator

    Adidas released the predator which revolutionised the football boot landscape to improve this equiptment available to the player to give them certain things like more comfort or grip.
  • Bosman

    The Bosman ruling allows all footballers playing in the European Union and not under contract to freely change clubs, and also abolishes foreign player quotas with respect to EU nationals. This meant that players could move for free and not be held to contracts.
  • Adidas Jabulani

    The Adidas Jabulani was released for the South African World cup and was really the first ball the was designed to be light and give goalkeepers problems with its movement patterns.
  • Hawk-Eye

    Hawk-Eye is first used in the Premier League, this is to tell the referee wether the ball has crossed the line or during a decision he may not be sure of.
  • Vanishing Sray

    The referee used this to mark where a free kick was to be taken and also 10 yards away for a wall to be formed.
  • Nike Magista

    Nike again revolutionised the football boot world by bringing out there all in one boot that goves over the ankle. It is designed to give a sock touch feeling and they blew adidas away with thier sales over the year.

    Adidas took the step of releasing the lighest ever football boots weighing just 99 grams.
