Germany declared war on France. England said they would help France if Belgium was invaded. This was because Belgium wasn't part of an alliance. Belgium was invaded by Belgium on their way to attacking France. -
Britain vs. Germany
Britain declared war on Germany because it had attacked Belgium. The Triple Entente (France, Great Britain, Russia) were at war against Germany & Austria-Hungary. -
Canada and Newfoundland
Canadians and Newfoundlanders responded to the call for volunteers with enthusiasm! By now, there were 30 000 Canadian soldiers and 8000 horses training at Valcartier, Quebec. In Newfoundland, 1000 men had signed up to go to war.
