  • John Brown

    He was a slavery abolitionist that went to/ influenced violent measures against proslavery people. He led a raid with the intention to cause a rebellion among the slaves, but it failed. His crimes created a chain of violence between the north and south, and the violence made them get closer to the Civil War because people were already being killed.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    This was an antislavery novel by Harriet Tubman through the accounts of a runaway slave that got help from white people in her journey to escape slavery. This novel created a larger divide between the north and south because when the northerners read the novel, there was increased opposition of slavery. Southerners were upset, feeling like this was not an accurate story about slaves. Her influence through the novel helped shape many opinions on slavery that helped cause the Civil War.
  • Bloody Kansas

    This was seen as one of the first battles of the Civil War because it was the first time that forces of anti-slavery and proslavery people met in violence in Kansas territory. The series of violence created much hostility between North and South. This was a turning point that created the beginning of the Civil War.
  • Republican Party

    This was a party that was formed by people that were against the Kansas Nebraska Act .This party holds support for classical liberalism and opposed expansion of slavery. This created a divide between the north and south because the party was created as a label for people against slavery to marginalize themselves. The increased divide created more tension that led to the Civil War.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    This act allowed people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether they wanted to be a free state or a slave state through popular sovereignty. This was a huge factor in the outbreak of war because there was a lot of violence and drama between the north and south when it came to deciding whether there should be slavery or not in their territory.
  • Brooks Sumner Incident

    Brooks attacked and beat Sumner so bad he had to leave Senate for 3 years because Brooks did not like what Sumner said in a speech making fun of his uncle and denouncing slavery. This violence was another reason hostility grew and the Civil War broke out.
  • Dred Scott

    He was an enslaved African-American that unsuccessfully sued for freedom of him and his family in a court case called Dred Scott v Sanford. Northerners did not think this was fair. This led to the Civil War because it created anger that slaves could not be considered free in free territories.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    Seven debates between a Republican and a Democrat with the question of slavery. This really pinned anti slavery people and proslavery people with the debates on what was right and wrong.
  • House divided speech

    A speech by Lincoln with purpose of saying that the nation cannot succeed when it’s divided between free and slave states. The north and south could not come to an agreement on slavery. This furthered their want for their beliefs on slavery all around the nation and led to Civil War
  • Harpers Ferry

    This was John Brown's raid that led to violence and increased hostility between the North and the South because he was going after proslavery people and what they believed by trying to free slaves. The increased hostility was a part in the outbreak of the Civil War.
  • Secession

    11 states ( Lower and Upper South ) separated from the Union. The south became a state of plantations and slaves while the north was industrial. The extent of this divide went as far as dividing from the Union, leading to Civil War.
  • Election 1860

    Abraham Lincoln became the President. He promised not to interfere with slavery and states but opposed the extension of slavery into other territories. This made Southerners mad because they wanted to expand slavery. The north did not want there to be slavery anymore. This still had an increase in tensions between the north and south when it came to slavery.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    drafted by pro-slavery advocates and included provisions to protect slaveholding in the state and to exclude free blacks from its bill of rights
  • Lincoln’s First Inaugural Speech

    The first speech made by Lincoln when he went into office. It talked about how he didn’t want there to be a divide in the nation or break in the Union. He talked about trying to compromise with both north and south
