    Long drives was when cowboys would drive herds across large areas to get them to market, in America they moved the cattle east over the western plains. Cattle ranching was when ranchers would raise the cattle instead of the free ranging cattle, with the railrod expanding it was possible to raise the cattle and send them off to market.
