The Mexican War Ended
In 1848 the mexican war ended and America gave up there western territories.With the new territories there were problems because they were deciding if the people would be free or slaves.the congress passed the compromise of 1850.This made California to be a free state no slaves. -
The Compromise of 1850
Divisions over slavery in territory gained in the Mexican-American (1846-48). War were resolved in the Compromise of 1850. It consisted of laws admitting California as a free state, creating Utah and New Mexico territories with the question of slavery in each to be determined by popular sovereignty, settling a Texas-New Mexico boundary dispute in the former's favor, ending the slave trade in Washington D.C., and making it easier for southerners to recover fugitive slaves. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Fugitive Slave Act was passed as part of the Compromise of 1850. It forced any federal official who did not arrest a runaway slave liable to pay a fine.This act increased the Underground Railroad activity as fleeing slaves made their way to Canada. -
Uncle's Tom Cabin was released
Uncle's Tom's cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. He wrote the book to show that slavery was bad. This book had a big impact on how the northerners viewed slavery. Abraham Lincoln read this book and thought this was one of the events that lead to the outbreak of the civil war. This book was one of the top sellers back in the day. -
Bleeding Kansas shocked Northeners
In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed allowing the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide fo themselves using popular sovereignty whether they wanted to be free or slaved. By 1856, Kansas had become a hotbed of violence as pro- and anti- slavery forces fought over the state's future to the point where it was named 'Bleeding Kansas'. -

The next day from when Bleeding Kansas started,
violence occurred on the U.S Senate's floor. The
Pro-slavery congressman Preston Brooks attacked
Charles Sumner with a cane after Charles Sumner
have been done giving his speech. Then the
violence was occurring with the pro- slavery. This
event was in May 22, 1856. -
Dredd Scott Decision
In 1857, Dred Scott sued for his freedom on the grounds he had lived in a free state and a free territory for a prolonged period of time. After eleven years, his case reached the supreme court. At stake were answers to critical questions, including slavery in the territories and citizenship of African-Americans -
Lecompton Constitution Rejected
When the Kansas-Nebraska act was passed
Kansas was able to determine if they were going to enter the union as a slave or free. In 1857,the Lecompton constitution was created by allowing Kansas to be a slave state.Then Kansas was sent back to vote and the voters rejected the constitution and Kansas became a free state. -
John Brown's Raided Harper's Valley
Abolitionist John Brown led a small group on a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry,(Currently West Virginia), Virginia in attempt to start an armed slave revolt and destroy the institution of slavery. His ''army'' included 22 men, including 5 black men and 3 of his sons. The group rented a Maryland farm near Harpers Ferry and prepared for the assault. -
Abraham Lincoln Was elected
Abraham Lincoln was elected on November 6, 1860. There were four people nominated and Abraham Lincoln was one of them. He was seen as a moderate on slavery. But, the southerners feared his election will lead to demise and vowed to leave the union if he was elected. So after all Abraham Lincoln won the election. Abraham Lincoln took away slavery from the south.
