    The Compromise of 1850
    Divisions over slavery in territory gained in the Mexican-American (1846-48). War were resolved in the Compromise of 1850. It consisted of laws admitting California as a free state, creating Utah and New Mexico territories with the question of slavery in each to be determined by popular sovereignty, settling a Texas-New Mexico boundary dispute in the former's favor, ending the slave trade in Washington D.C., and making it easier for southerners to recover fugitive slaves.

    In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed allowing the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide fo themselves using popular sovereignty whether they wanted to be free or slaved. By 1856, Kansas had become a hotbed of violence as pro- and anti- slavery forces fought over the state's future to the point where it was named 'Bleeding Kansas'.

    Kansas was able to determine if they were going to enter the union as a slave or free. In 1857,the Lecompton constitution was created by allowing Kansas to be a slave state.Then Kansas was sent back to vote and the voters rejected the constitution and Kansas became a free state.

    Abolitionist John Brown led a small group on a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry,(Currently West Virginia), Virginia in attempt to start an armed slave revolt and destroy the institution of slavery. His ''army'' included 22 men, including 5 black men and 3 of his sons. The group rented a Maryland farm near Harpers Ferry and prepared for the assault.

Abraham Lincoln took away slavery from the south.
