Computer History

  • Hewlett-Packard is Founded

    Hewlett-Packard is Founded
Their first product was the HP 200A Audio Oscillator, which becomes a popular piece of test equipment for engineers. Walt Disney Pictures ordered eight of the 200B model to use as sound effects generators for the 1940 movie “Fantasia.” I picked this topic for my timelike because this is how Sound effects in movies started, this was the beginning of sound in technology.
  • CNC

    CNC
The CNC is a Complex Number Calculator. This is considered to be the first demonstration of remote access computing. This is cool because performing calculations remotely was really big at the time, but now it is used often for different jobs.
  • Software & Languages

    Software & Languages
Konrad Zuse began work on Plankalkul (Plan Calculus). Which was the first algorithmic programming language. Seven years ago he also created a binary code in a computer which was the Z1. I chose to include this event in my timeline because this man created a binary code, which most computers use.
  • First commercially produced computer

    First commercially produced computer
Engineering Research Associates of Minneapolis built the ERA 1101.
The company´s first customer was the U.S. Navy. It held 1 million bits, on its magnetic drum. This was one of the earliest magnetic storage device.
  • Storage

    Storage
Virtual memory was created at the University of Manchester, on an Atlas computer. This virtual memory permitted a computer to use its storage limit to switch rapidly among different users and is important for timesharing.
  • Robots & Artificial Intelligence

    Robots & Artificial Intelligence
In Stanford, a man created the first robotic arm, It is able to control and guide itself with optical and contact sensors. This is a cool topic because, people who have lost their arm, can replace it was a robotic one if they wish.
  • Memory

    Memory
The VAX 11/780 was able to hold up to 4.3 GB of virtual memory. This is cool, because 4.3 GB is a lot for when it came out, and it's crazy to think that now, people don'd consider that much memory.
  • Software and Languages

    Software and Languages
Gary Kildall created a CP/M, which is an operating system for personal computers. This allowed one program to run on more than one computer. This is important because many people use a personal computer, and I don't think they have thought that their program can be used in more than one computer.
  • Computers

    Computers
Amiga 1000 is released which was sold for over $1,000 without the moitor, but was the MacBook Pro of the day, because it had audio and video capabilities beyond other computers of this time. This is cool to see because you can compare a laptop from this day to back then, and we all had the same reactions when they came out. Its new! It must be amazing!
  • Yahoo!

    Yahoo!
Yahoo! is founded, and would quickly expand to become one of the Internet’s most popular search engines. This is cool, because I remember using Yahoo! and Yahooligans when i was in Kindergarden.
