    Phoenix College 100 Years Of Excellence Timeline

    On September 13, 1920, Phoenix College opened its doors to 18 students, under the direction of the first Dean, Weston W Carpenter. Classes offered included: chemistry, English, home economics, mathematics, mechanical arts, military training, physical training and Spanish.

    Creation of a governing body

    The first "Student Government' was established as the number of students rose to 90 in 1921. The constitution written by the governing body was accepted by the students. This action created an opportunity for students to be part of ongoing leadership for PJC.

    Events of the first decade of Phoenix Junior College

    A football team was assembled, Theatre students debuted their first production, "Tailor Made Man", and five students took part of the first commencement ceremony in 1922. The student newspaper ran its first publication called "Bear Growls" in September 1923, and with a growing student body, PJC purchased 4 1/2 acres at Fillmore and Seventh Street and moved its classes to "Cottonwood Court" in 1925. Formal accreditation in 1928 was a huge boost to the scholastic standing of PJC.
  • Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) in Maryland

    AACC confers with employers and community partners to create solutions to the local workforce demand. To support teaching theoretical foundations and critical thinking skills, along with preparation for the certification exams required by DOD, this program prepares graduates to be eligible for over 40,000 jobs available over the next several years.
  • Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York

    In an effort to build technical skills and knowledge that lead directly to employment in the community, Monroe Community College (MCC) implemented the Economic Development and Innovative Workforce Services program (EDWIS). The focus of the program is to learn what technological requirements the local businesses desire in a newly hired employee and offer courses that teach those skills.

    Tunnel of Oppression event at Phoenix College

    The benefit of learning how others feel is priceless education. This event focused on gender equality to include the transgender population. It addressed the fact that the inequality can bring about anxiety, fear, and depression thereby allowing oppression to perpetuate. The awareness is needed for those who are ignorant or for those who were taught differently. Everyone deserves to be treated equally. The event brings awareness to the community as a whole so healing can begin for everyone.

    “Hope”, A Critical Analysis

    The College of Alameda in California hosted an event focusing on the Economic Status of Black People in “America” during the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877). Bringing awareness about the inhumane activities the Black community endured and still continues to endure can cultivate conversation and bring understanding to those who do not know the truth. This strengthens the community as a whole and hopefully begins to change the hearts of the people.
