Colonisation

  • Van Diemen's Land

Van Dieman's land became a seperate colony. It was first settled to prevent the French from claiming the land. It was later used to keep prisoners that comitted secondary crimes after being transported to Australia.
In 18221 many convicts escaped a settlement in Van Dieman's land and became bushrangers.
In 1855 Van Dieman's land was renamed to Tasmania and has kept this name since.
  • Western Australia

Western Australia was first colonized to keep the French away. The first Governor of this colony was James Stirling.
Most of the people that were part of this colony had little to no farming experience and the colony almost failed because of this.
  • South Australia

South Australia was colonised by free settlers for the purpose of selling land and to harvest what resources the land had.
At first the NSW government had part in running the colony but this was stopped in 1842 and was governed by the settlers that were already there. Wine became a big sales item in 1838 in which wine began to be produced.
  • Victoria

Victoria was colonised to make sure that the French did not claim the land. Many of the other colonies also have this reason for colonisation.
Gold was found in the 1850's and was often looked for but was rarely found by anyone. Although the people that did find the gold became very wealth and probably didn't need to work anymore.
In the 1880's factories became popular and began to replace some of the workers.
  • Queensland

Queensland was first colonised as a convict settlement because it was very far away from the main settlement which was in NSW. Free Settlers were completely forbidden to go there until 1842.
There were many goldfields in this area so many free settlers moved to Queensland in attempt to find gold.
  • Northern Territory

The Northern Territory was colonised so that they could provide suppies to British Navy Ships.
Northern Territory was controlled by NSW up until 1863 in which South Australia took contol of it. In 1911, Northern Territory became its own colony.
