    The Arrival of the First Fleet
    Event - 732 convicts from Britain arrived in 11 ships on the First Fleet at Botany Bay, under Governor Arthur Phillip. This included 543 men and 189 women. However Botany Bay was considered poor for crop growing so they settled north at Port Jackson on the 26th of January.

    Effect - Because of this event the first white settlement evolved in Australia. In the short term it solved Britain's convict problem and produced some hard working men and women in the colonies. In the long term this event led to a very prosperous country which developed under British rule and is still today a member of the commonwealth.

    Event - John Macarthur, NSW Crops officer, trader and settler, buys and imports the first Merino Sheep and becomes the first ever Merino Sheep breeder in Australia. Wool will become the main effect on the Australian economy for the next 200 years.

    Effect - Because of this event, in the short term the sheep industry began and provided a major economy for the colonies. The long term effect is that Australia is now the world's leading producer of wool, accountting for around 24% of global wool production.

    John Macarthur was born in Plymouth in the UK in 1767. After being in the army he was sent to Sydney in 1789 and purchsed his first flockof sheep in 1795 and a small flock of Spanish Merino in 1797. Soon he realised the financial potenial of producing wool for export.

    Matthew Flinders suggests the name "Australia"
    Event - Matthew Flinders became the first explorer to circumnavigate the whole continent and suggests it should be called "Australia" from the Latin term for the unkwnown Great Southern Land. The white settlers start using this name.
    Effect - Because of this event I think Australia started to form it's own identity in the short term. In the long term this led "Australia" becoming known as one of the largest countries in the world and recognised worldwide.

    John Macarthur begged for more land and was granted 5,000 acres of prime grazing land in NSW. He became the largest sheep rearer in the colony.

    John Macarthur exported the first bale of Australian wool. He went on to make a fortune exporting Merino wool to the UK. He also gained recognition for producing the finest quality wool. His ventures opened the door for others to follow and Australia's wool export market started to boom in the eaarly 1800s. Today, Australia is still the world's largest producer of wool. Macarthur deserves recognition as the "Pioneer of the Wool Industry in Australia".

    Event - The colony reduces trade in barter and IOUs and a bigger supply of English coins arrive. The Bank of New South Wales is established.

    Effect - In the short term it provided a safe place for the population to save their earnings and it also provided a means for people to borrow money. In the long term this event established a sophisticated banking system and is now known as Westpac offering a whole range of finacial services in Australia. Today Westpac has 11.8 million customers and employs over 36,00 people.

    The Society for the Arts in London awarded John Macarthur two medals for exporting 16,00 kg of wool to England and for increasing the quality.

    Event - The British settled in Western Australia and claimed it as their own. A colony is established at the mouth of the Swan River. This means that the country of Australia now occupies the whole continent.

    Effect - Because of ths event, the population expanded westwards in the short term and there is one government for the whole continent and there is access to a great variety of resources. In the long term this has led to the establishment of the main city of Perth and Australia having a stable government and a very large area of land to support the population of the country.

    John Macarthur died at Camden NSW. He was honoured on a postage stamp in 1934 and his image appeared on the first Australian 2 dollar note in 1966. He deseved this special recognition as he was the founder of one of Australia's biggest export industries (wool).
  • Myall Creek Massacre

    Myall Creek Massacre
    Event - A gang of 11 stockman brutally slaughtered a group of 28 members of the Wirrayaraay people who were camped next to the station huts on the Myall Creek cattle station. They were not convicted at the first trial. Governor Gipps was outraged and ordered a re-trial. It was the first time in history that white men were arrested and hanged for the murder of Aboriginies.

    Effect - Because of this event it sent a message to the whites that killing Aboriginies would not be tolorated. In the short term this led to less killings and in the long term enabled Indigenous populations to remain in Australia and not be completly killed off keeping Aboriginal culture alive in Australia.

    Event - New South Wales held the first elections for the Legislative council.
    Effect - Because of this event in the short term this allowed people to vote and have a say in the running of the country. In the long term this has led to Australia becoming a democratic government. Where all citizens today have a say in the laws which are made and in how their lives are run. This type of government is called a "Democracy".

    Event - Gold was found near Bathurst in NSW then in Victoria near what is now Ballarat. This was the start of the "Gold Rush".
    Effect - Because of this event tens of thousands of immigrants from all over the world came to Australia to strike it rich. These people bought a huge range of skills and cultures. In the long term this led to Australia becoming a multi-cultral country and it led to a boom in industry.

    Event - Familiar animals and plants from Britain, such as rabbits, foxes, starlings and blackberries were imported to make the British born feel more comfortable.

    Effect - Because of this event many farms were destroyed by rabbits and farmers lost there income. Foxes also killed many native animals. In the long term large amonts of money have been spent on rabbit and fox control. Bringing these animals to Australia turned out to be a very big mistake because it led to long term agricultural and environmental problems.

    Event - In NSW the first aboriginal children are enroled in pulic schools and they no longer had to go to a missonary schools.
    Effect - Because of this event the aboriginal children were allowed to mix with whites and get the same eduaction. In the long term this led to the blacks getting equal opportunities as whites.

    Chinese arrivals refused landing at Sydney
    Event - A ship load of Chinese arrivals are not alowed to come to shore in Sydney. A crowd of people protest at Parliament House demanding the Premier to "stop the invason". Anti Chnese Legislation is passed.

    Effect - Because of this event it saw less Chinese come into the country in the short term. In the long term this event became the basis for the "White Australia Policy". The White Australia Policy was put in place after Federation in 1901 and only allowed immigration from certain countries. It was intended to only allow "white" people and discriminated against people according to their skin colour. This policy came to an end in 1973.

    Event - South Australia has granted women the right to vote and stand for parliament. Western Australia was the first place to do this in the world.
    Effect - Because of this event in the short term womens rights started getting equal with mens. In the long term it is because of this that Australia is now able to have a female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. And women now play just as important roles as men in society.
