  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was a pledge to provide economic and military aid to oppose the spread of communism. The U.S. Congress agreed to send Turkey and Greece, both non-communist countries, hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall plan provided $13 billion for the rebuilding of Europe. The plan helped Europe recover from the war. The plan also helped preserve political stability.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    In June 1948, the Soviets prevented supplies to get to West Berlin by land. In response to that, West Berlin was supplied by airplanes.
  • The formation of NATO

    The formation of NATO
    The United States, Canada and most western countries joined a military alliance. The alliance was called NATO or the North American Treaty Organization. The goal of the treaty was to counter act Soviet power in Europe.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Soviet Union and the United States decided to split Korea, one half being Communist and the other non-communist. During the war, both communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea tried to expand their territory. In the end however, the borders were almost unchanged from the beginning of the war.
  • The formation of the Warsaw Pact

    The formation of the Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact was an alliance of Communist countries in Europe and the Soviet Union. It was created in response to NATO.
  • The Soviet Union Launches Sputnik

    Sputnik was history's first artificial satellite, an object that orbits the Earth. In reaction to Sputnik, Americans feared that the Soviets' military technology was much more advanced than their own.
  • The Bay of Pigs invasion

    As a result of the Cuban goverment being overthrown by a communist leader, Fidel Castro, the U.S. led the Bay of Pigs invasion with secretly trained Cubans who had fled Castros regime. The U.S. believed the invasion would start an uprising against Castro, but the invaders were quickly defeated.
  • The erecting of the Berlin Wall

    The erecting of the Berlin Wall
    People living in East Germany often went to work in West Berlin. East Germany did not like that so they built the Berlin Wall. Guards were posted along the wall so anybody trying to leave East Germany would be shot.
  • Cuban missile crisis

    Cuban missile crisis
    The U.S. discovered missiles on Cuba for the Soviet Union pointed towards the U.S.. After two weeks, the U.S. And the Soviet Union agreed to remove their missiles pointed at eachother's territory. The U.S. removed their missiles from Turkey and the Soviet Union removed theirs from Cuba.
