    After the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, over 100,000 had died. FInally after the bombing, Japan had surrendered along with Germany.
  • The Iron Curtain

    The Iron Curtain
    The creation of the Iron Curtain was a border between East and West Berlin. The Soviet Union created the barrier to stop people in the East from crossing to the West. The barrier was kept there until the end of the Cold War in 1991.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was a program created by the Americans to help Europe rebuild economies after World War II. The program was held for four years beginning in April, 1948.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    After the Soviets caused a blockade, western powers airlifted over a million tons of resources and people into the city. When this ended, Soviets lifted the blockade, on May 12, 1949.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The war began when North Korean soldiers invaded South Korea. In July, American troops helped and aided South Korea, againist the North. Both North and South Korea fought back and fourth until it became divided to the way it was before the war began.

    USA and USSR rivaled to see who could get farthest in space. The Soviets began with Sputnik, a satellite launched into Earth's orbit. A year later, the US launched their satellite named Explorer I.

    The Bay of Pigs was an invasion on Cuba lead by the US, but failed. No more than 24 hours did the US surrender and failed miserably to attack Cuba.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    In October, an American spy plane sited a Soviet nuclear missile on an island in Cuba. A blockade began which surrounded Cuba to prevent Soviets from sending more nuclear missiles. After, The two made a treaty banning nuclear test.
  • SALT

    SALT
    The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) was created to restrain the race of missiles armed with nuclear weapons. Both the Soviets and the US signed the agreement in 1971 and 1979.
  • End of the Cold War

    End of the Cold War
    The fall of the Iron Curtain marked the end of the Cold War in 1991. Soviet states in Eastern Europe were free and the Soviet Union broke up.
