    Cold War Timeline

  • Sputnik!

    Sputnik!
October 4, 1957. The day Russia launched the first satellite into space. Sputnik was the size of a basketball and weighed only 183 pounds. The satellite took about an hour and a half to orbit the Earth.
The reason the launch of Sputnik is important is because Russia got a successful launch into space while USA had tried many times and failed. USA was shocked when it happened. It was a great victory for Russia.
  • Rational

My reason for choosing this event in the Cold War was because the Berlin Wall was up from 1961-1990 and plays a pretty big part in the Cold War. The reason it plays a big part is because it literally separated Germany into two different countries for 29 or so years, and it was serious enough to have to have a wall put up in the first place.
  • Berlin Wall Built

    Berlin Wall Built
On August 13,1961, the Berlin Wall was put up in place of barbed wire. The reason it was put up was to separate East and West Germany. It was also meant to prevent East Germans from crossing into West Germany. The wall was 850 miles long and fifteen feet high with barbed wire and watch towers at the top, armed with machine guns and mines. Still, about 5,000 East Germans managed to get across the wall.
  • Apollo 11 Lands on the moon

Apollo 11 was the 'spaceship' to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. Today, this mission is still talked about among many people. The reason I chose this event is because after Russia's launch, USA got a man ONTO the moon. This is important because even though here was no actual fighting in the cold war, there was still a battle between Russia and USA.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
On this day, people destroyed the Berlin Wall that was previously separating Germany into two different countries, East and West Germany. The wall had been up for 28 years at that point. People came at it with pickaxes and destroyed it.
The reason I chose this event was because when the wall came down, Germany was one country again. They were united. They all got to destroy a wall together. I find this event pretty significant because after 28 years of the wall being up, the country was united.
  • USSR Falls

    USSR Falls
The USSR was no more on December 26, 1991. Everyone voted and 90% of people voted for independence after CPSU activities were suspended from Soviet territories on August 24 1991.
The reason I chose this event is because it was the fall of possibly one of the greatest republics of all time. This is important because it was also at the end of the Cold War, while there was so much 'mental' fighting going on between countries. Everyone was just pushing everyone else and at the end USSR was gone.
