US sends a man to the moon - get detailed!

The U.S. sending a man to the moon was all a part of the space race. The space race was a race back in the 60's where countries were rushing for technological advancements in order to make advancements in space research. In 1969 U.S. put the first man on the moon. This man was Neil Armstrong. He was sent to the moon on the Apollo 11 spacecraft with his crew of 2. This also shows an example of how slow and complicated the cold war was. Countries left their disputes out of absolutely nothing.

    USSR invades Afghanistan

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan, which broke the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978. The Soviets planned a massive military airlift into Kabul Afghanistan. It was estimated to have about 280 transport air crafts and three divisions of almost 8,500 men each. The Afghan resistance was fierce, but brief. These battles went back and forth until 1989. This shows an example of how the Cold War went. It was long and dragged on for years. This is a perfect example of how slow the Cold War moved.

1980 Olympic Hockey game between the Soviet Union and the United States

This event was a hockey game between the Soviet Union, and the United states in the 1980 Olympics. This game was in the finals, and ended in a huge upset. Russia was the 4 time gold medalist defending champions, going up against the U.S. team completely made up of college players for the Olympic gold. Russia ended up losing to the U.S. 4-3. This was a huge victory for the U.S. because it showed everyone that even though the U.S. was weaker than the Soviets, we could still win the war.
