    The primary allied nations met at the sea-resort of Yalta in Crimea to discuss the future of Europe. The three powers agreed to divide Germany it into three zones of occupation. The Soviet Union accordingly occupied these zones, which led to the division of Europe into democratic and communist spheres and the Cold War between the US and the USSR.

    to western Berlin. The Russians believed that this would drive the U.S., France, and Britain out of the city because of food and supply shortages, leaving Berlin to the Russians. However instead of fleeing the city, the U.S., Britain and France had all supplies dropped in from the air. This lasted for over a year and became known as the “Berlin Airlift”.

    On June 24th, 1948, the Soviets imposed a blockade on food and fuel in an effort to keep out their western rivals. Under the blockade, the Soviets cut off all railways, roads and canals into Berlin so food and fuel could not reach the two million people from Berlin who lived there. Electricity was also cut.

    NATO, otherwise know as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was an alliance established as a defense system. The Western Powers mostly relied on all the nuclear weapons that the US had for Soviet ground invasion. Then later on NATO switched from more of a military force to a mostly political force.

    On May 12, 1949, the Soviet Union ceased its 11-month blockade of West Berlin, along with its effort to isolate and annex the city. The blockade was defeated by a massive daily U.S.-U.K. airlift of supplies.

    The Warsaw Pact was a mutual defense treaty between the eight communist states of Eastern Europe that were in existence during the Cold War. The founding treaty was found under the initiative of the Soviet Union and signed on 14 May 1955, in Warsaw. The Warsaw Pact was the military match to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, the regional economic organization for the communist states of Eastern Europe.

    The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I on October 4, 1957. The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball, weighed about 185 pounds. It is said that this marked the start of the Space Age.

    • Senator Keating charges that six ballistic missiles are constructed in Cuba on October 10, 1962. -The U.S. stations missles in Turkey pointed towards Cuba. -Khrushchev sends another letter to Kennedy saying that he would remove his missiles if Kennedy would publicly announce that the U.S. would never invade Cuba on October 26, 1962. -On October 27, Kennedy informs Khrushchev that the U.S will attack Cuba if they don't remove the missiles from Cuba.

    From the 1950's to the 1960's thousands of people began crossing the border between east Berlin and West Berlin to unite with families. To stop this the Communist government began construction of the Berlin Wall in attempt to keep refugees out of Germany. The wall consisted of a concrete wall armed with sentry towers, and it was surrounded by mines.

    Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The people who walked on the moon was Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969. The astronauts also brought the first samples from another planetary body. Apollo 11 achieved its goal which was to perform a manned lunar landing and return the mission safely to Earth.

    On 15 March 1990, Gorbachev was elected as the first executive President of the Soviet Union with 59% of the deputies' votes being an unopposed candidate. The Congress met for the first time on the 25th of May in order to elect representatives from Congress to sit on the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union.

    East German government official Günter Schabowski stated during a press conference that travel through the border to the West was open. Crowds on both sides waited there for hours, cheering at the bulldozers which took parts of the Wall away to reinstate old roads. The fall of the Wall was the first step toward German reunification, which was formally concluded on 3 October 1990.

    After 36 years in existence, the Warsaw Pact—the military alliance between the Soviet Union and its eastern European satellites—came to an end in 1991. The action was another sign that the Soviet Union was losing control over its former allies and that the Cold War was falling apart. This was the start of the demise of the Soviet Union.
