After WWII, Germany was divided between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union. Berlin was in the Eastern Soviet sector, but its control was split between the Western powers and the USSR as it was the capital city. In 1948, the USSR cut off surface traffic to West Berlin to gain control. The US responded with a daily airlift of food and supplies, lasting until September 1949, delivering 2.3 million tons of supplies and fuel to the besieged city.
