    Sand Creek Massacre
    A group of seven hundred soldiers from the Colorado militia attacked a village of peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho indians. The militia slaughtered between seventy and one hundred indians, two thirds of them being women an children. This was one of the worst acts commited during the battle with the Plains Indians.

    The treaty protected sacred sioux hunting ground in the black hills. When Custer discoverd gold in the black hills miners and settlers swarmed to the area, violating the treaty. Native American resistance was fierce, and culmintated in the battle of Little Big Horn.

    Three treaties between the plains Indians and the United states government. The treaty was designed to help bring peace to the plains region. This would be brought about by relocating the Indians to reservations.

    Palo Duro Canyon was a strong hold for indian tribes, it held supplies and food. Colonel Mckenzie planned a surprise attack on the canyon. Mckenzie's troops successfully achieved surprise and easily defeated the Indians who were spread thin throughout the Canyon Floor.

    Was the greatest battle in the Great Sioux war. The result was an crushing defeat for Custer and his army. Custer himself died as well as most of the seven hundreth division.

    The Nez perce were fleeing the the canadian border, their few warriors they had left defending the small band of mostly women and children. When they were only forty miles from the border Chief Joseph surrendered saying "from were the sun now stands i will fight no more forever". They were then taken to and indian reservation in Idaho where they remain to this day.

    Geranamo managed to aviod fedral troops when they began gathering his people and taking them to reservations. He eventually gave in and lived on the reservation for ahwile. Before long he returned to his old was and recruited a band of followers that roamed the country side for years before Geranamo was finally captured and taken to a reservation in Florida.

    The Ghost Dance was a dance inspired by the teachings of Wovoka. In his vision Wovoka said that if the indians performed the dance the white man would leave and the buffalo would return. The dance scared the whites because they thought it was a war dance.

  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    Wounded Knee Massacre
    It was the last battle of the Great Indian war. The U.S. troops surrounded a lakota encampment and went into the camp to disarm the indians. When a deaf indian named Black Coyote refused to hand over his weapon confusion errupted and people from botth sides began firing. The end result was a massive loss of Indian life mostly woman and children.
