  • Sand Creek Massacre

    Sand Creek Massacre
    Black Kettle and Cheynenne Indians set up a winter camp 40 miles from Fort Lyon. They thought they were protected. Col. John Chivington marched down there with his troops to kill the indians. They even saw a white flag and American flag but proceeded to kill them all anyhow. They killed about 200 Indians.
  • Medicine Lodge Treaty

    Medicine Lodge Treaty
    U.S. officials and tribes like the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache agreed to meet at Fort Larned along Medicine Lodge Creek. The treaty let the tribes to collect gifts from the government. They also told them where they could live at for land.
  • 2nd Treaty of Ft. Laramie

    2nd Treaty of Ft. Laramie
    It was an agreement between the United States and the Lakota nation, and some other tribes. It was signed in 1868 at Fort Laramie. It was guaranteeing to the Lakota ownership of the Black Hills, and further land and hunting rights in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. This also ended Red Cloud's war.
  • Battle of Palo Duro Canyon

    Battle of Palo Duro Canyon
    This Canyon was where the Comanche and the Kiowa Indians lived. Their way of life was being attacked by the railroads and settlers. So to fight back, the Indians would raid the settlements. Ranald S. MacKenzie had had enough of this, so he surrounded the Indians on all sides. The Indians surreneded. Mackenzie then took their horses and killed them all.

    This battle was part of the Great Sioux War. It was located by the Little Bighorn River in Montana. Custer underestimated the size of the Indian forces which made him loose the battle.
  • Relocation of the Nez Perce

    Relocation of the Nez Perce
    After their 1877 defeat in Montana, Chief Joseph’s followers were relocated to a small reservation in the north part of the reservation. Then they were moved to present-day Ponca City, Oklahoma. They had trouble though with all the new settlers moving to Oklahoma.
  • Capture of Geronimo

    Capture of Geronimo
    After his surreneded 1883 he and some of his tribe members left the reservations. They wanted to go to the Mountains of Old Mexico where they could raid Mexican towns and ranches again. General George Crook chased the Indians for ten months. The capture of Geronimo took place at Skeleton Canyon in September 1886. From there. he was escorted to Fort Bowie to be watched over.

    Ghost Dance movement begins
    The Indians did this dance to hope that practice of the dance would bring peace, prosperity, and unity to native peoples throughout the region. They american settlers took this as a dance of war. This did not help relationships get better bewtween the two cultures.
  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    Wounded Knee Massacre
    The officals were very scared that the ghost dance meant war for the Indians. The whites entered their camp and demanded the Indians firearms be taken away. One Indian refused to give up his weapon. On shot was fired and many more after that. This was very unnecessary. 150 Indians had been killed. Forsyth officer was charged with killing innocents later on.
