    The term “Whig” was used by Henry Clay to show his opposition against “King Andrew” and his “abuse” of power. The term was quickly adopted and was used to describe the Whig party, a political party that portrayed itself as order and stability. They opposed the democrats and ran 3 presidential candidates to appeal and attempt to throw the election into the House of Representatives. They soon drifted into the know-nothing movement and start to assimilate itself with the republican party.

    The Lecompton Constitution was created by President James Buchanan to find a solution to the riots of the Bleeding Kansas, he wanted Kansas to join the union as a slave state. Pro-slavery supporters ruled in favor of this constitution, trying to push it into US congress for acceptation. The constitution was rejected after a national debate, and it was one of the main topics discussed at the Lincoln-Douglas debates
