  • Compromise of 1850

    This compromise was meant to appease both sides but did not do a good job. The fugutive slave law that was part of it cause much dispute.

    Northerners must send escaped fugitive slaves back to their owners. If the Northerners did not abide by this they could be thrown into jail.

    Uncle Tom’s Cabin publication
    This novel was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and it was about anti-slavery. It demanded that the United States deliver on the promise of freedom and equality.

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854

    This act made Kansas and Nebraska both states while giving the option to white male settlers in that stae to vote if it would become a slave state, overruling the Missouri Compromise. This act of voting became known as popular sovereignty.

  • Brooks attacks Sumner in Senate

    Southern congressman Preston Brooks savagely beat northern senator Charles Sumner in a dispute over slavery.

    The party was created in Philadelphia and the founders of this party completely opposed slavery. It rejected the right of the Southern view on slavery being used in a territory.

    It was a ruling by the supreme court that African Americans, free or enslved, were not American citizens and could not sue in court. It also ruled that the federal government had no right to regulate slavery.

    John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown was an abolitionist and he rallied a group to attack Harper's fairy. He had hopes of stealing weapons and getting other slaves and freedom fighters to help in the attack but it was a miserable failure and he was later hung.

    The north and South were obviously divided and had the two canidates show this. Abraham Lincoln became president and beat Harry Hamlin and this caused the change in history because of the rise of The Confederation

  • Shots fired at Fort Sumter, SC

    Shots were fired at fort Sumter in Siuth Carolina starting the civil war. General P.G.T. Beauregard told his troops to open fire on Union soldiers.
