The Missouri Compromise was held on March 3rd 1820. The compromise decided to allow Maine to become a free state. However the compromise was that Missouri became a slave state. The reason they made missouri a slave state was to keep the balance between slave state. It also outlawed slavery above the 36º 30' latitude.

Texas became a state in 1845. Texas became the 28th state in the United States. Texas had been an independent country since 1836.

The Wilmot Proviso stated "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall ever exist." this made slavery illegal in the land won during the Mexican-American War. Wilmot Proviso eventually failed. This happened because the north had the majority in the house but couldn't get it to pass the senate. Therefore the law could never get passed because it needed approval of both.

The compromise of 1850 was actually a combination of five separate bills passed by the United States Congress in September 1850. The purpose of these bills were to deal with the new territories and attempt to deal with slavery. Effect wise it temporary lowered tensions between slave and free states.

Uncle Tom's Cabin gave Harriet Beecher Stowe a way to share ideas about the injustices of slavery. She the became a leading voice in the anti-slavery movement. The book also opened peoples eyes to how extremely cruel it really was.

The Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854 created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. This act repealed the Missouri Compromise. This outlawed slavery above the 36º30' latitude in the Louisiana territories.

Scott v. Sandford was important because it outraged abolitionists. Who believed the ruling as a way to stop debate about slavery in the territories. This increased the divide between North and South. This eventually culminated in the secession of southern states from the Union.

The abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry. It was intended to start a slave revolt in the southern states. Its known as the dress rehearsal for the Civil War.

The importance of the 1860 election was that Abraham Lincoln won the election. He had won against 3 other candidates. He had received less than 40 percent of the popular vote. However he had won easily based on the electoral college vote. The south saw lincoln as a treat to slavery.

On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. He was assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth. He was attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. He was shot in the head as he watched the play. Lincoln then died the next day.
