    Fugitive Slave Act
    This heightened Northern fears of a "slave power conspiracy". It required that all escaped slaves were, upon capture, to be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens of free states had to cooperate in this law.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas–Nebraska Act divided the nation and pointed it toward civil war. The act itself virtually nullified the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The turmoil over the act split both the Democratic and Whig parties and gave rise to the Republican Party, which split the United States into two major political camps, North and South .

    Opponents of slavery fiercely attacked the Dred Scott decision. The Democratic party splits in 1860, the southerns demand for a slave code and the northern Democrats refuse to accept that position.

    When Abraham Lincoln was elected as president in 1860. Southerns warned that if Lincoln won they would secede. On December 20, 1860 South Carolina is the first state to secede.
