  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    This was an agreement passed between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the United states congress . It was made to regulate slavery in the western territories. It prohibited slavery in the Lousiania territory except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri.
  • Clay Compromise

    Clay Compromise
    This was a package of 5 bills that stopped a four year confrontation between the slave states of the south and free states of the north. It avoided secession and Civil war at the time.
  • Fugitive Slave Act Becomes a Law

    Fugitive Slave Act Becomes a Law
    This law stated that in the future, any federal marshal who didn't arrest a runaway slave would be fined $1,000. Anyone suspected to be a runaway would be turned over to a claimant.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and allowed settlers in the territories to decide if they would allow slavery within their boundaries. It established that settlers could vote to decide whether to allow slavery or not.

    This made it so all black people, even if they were free, were not and could never become citizens of the United States. This made the black people very angry.
  • John Brown raided Harper's Ferry

    John Brown raided Harper's Ferry
    John brown and twenty-one armed followers made their way into the town of harpers ferry, Virginia and seized the town's United States arsenal and its rifle works. They took people hostage, but eventually were captured, and John Brown was hanged.
