  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri compromise consisted Missouri, Maine, and congress. The purpose was to stop rivalries between political parties and the states. This was an issue because there was a lot of violence between the states and confusion on how to keep the amount of slave states and free states equal. In the end Missouri became a slave state and Maine entered s a free state. This lead to the civil war because the north did not want slavery and adding another slave stated added to their anger.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    This was between Wilmot Proviso and congress. Proviso wanted to ban slavery, ban it in an arena that was gained from the Mexican-American war. His proposal then got denied by congress. This angered the northerners and southerners. The north was upset because they wanted to ban slavery altogether and this only set them back. The south was upset because they wanted to keep slavery and were hurt that he even proposed this. This contributed to the civil war by pulling north and south apart.

    Compromise of 1850
    This compromise consisted of 5 separate bills that reduced the arguments and violence between the free states and the slave states. This was issued by the United States congress and affected all of the US. The violence between free and slave states was continuing to rise and the arguments were becoming harsher. The United Stated hoped this would solve all of the issues. This event lead to civil war by including the territory gained by the Mexican-American war, which Mexico was not happy about.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    This new act provided slave owners with legal weapons to capture escaped slaves. This also created a new law that if an escaped slave was found in a free state they must be returned back to their owner. This was a law that included all of the US. Slave owners were losing slaved very fast and they were also losing money, this solved their issues. This lead to the civil war by infuriating the north but meeting the south's demands which only further angered the north.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Harriet Beecher Stowe, a abolitionist, wrote a book in Kentucky about slavery. This involved many people in the north and the south. She wrote this book to help people in the south realize how bad slavery was and the possible effects if it continued. This book helped make slavery less popular and caused many people to oppose slavery from realizing how cruel it was.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 allowed people in Kansas or Nebraska decide whether they wanted to allow slavery or not. Stephen Douglas was a main leader and creator to this act. They created this because many citizens were arguing if they wanted to be a considered a free or slave state. The Kansas-Nebraska Act actually caused more violence through the states. So to this day Kansas is known as "Bleeding Kansas" from the violence.

    John Brown's Raid
    It involved John Brown Harper's Ferry, Robert E. Lee, Brown’s cohorts. What happened was Brown and his men started a raid and tried to take over Harper’s Ferry because he wanted to start a slave revolt and end slavery. It was located on Harper's Ferry, West Virginia and it's important to history because more people began to fight against slavery.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    This involved John Emerson and Dred Scott. What happened was no black slaves were allowed to clain U.S. citizenship. Slaves wanted to be free and be in a non-slavery territory. Therefore, Dred Scott argued and took the case to the supreme court and by a majority vote (7-2), the supreme court ruled that Scott could not take the case to the federal court. Scott was later sold and his owner gave him freedom 2 months after the ruling. This is important since it brought tension to the slavery issue.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had series of debates in Illinois. These debates involved the U.S. senators. Lincoln would debate about the extension of slavery in the territories such as Kansas. U.S. senators were elected by state legislatives and they were trying for there respective parties to win power. Stephen Douglas won the debates and Lincoln is was known for to be a major political figure.
  • Lincoln Election of 1860

    Lincoln Election of 1860
    It involved Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John C. Breckenridge, John Bell. What happened was Abraham Lincoln won the election which resulted to the southern states seceding. This event took place to elect for a new president and it was located in Virginia. This is important to history because Lincoln didn't believe in slavery and wanted to end it.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    This involved all 11 states in the South and Abraham Lincoln. What happened was the southern states seceded from the union because they didn't agree with Lincoln's stance on slavery (he didn't support it). Within 3 months of Lincoln's election, 7 states had broken away. They joined together to form the Confederate States of America. This is important to history because it led to the confederacy and outbreak of the civil war.
