  • The Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a free African American Man who lived in a state where slavery was prohibited. The court ruled Scott to having no freedom and declared that no African american man or woman was free in the United States. This went against many rules, including The Missouri Compromise. This added more flame to the fire that divided the pro and anti-slave supporters.

    Lincoln – Douglas Debates
    A series of debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas circling the topic of slavery and slave states. Both of the representatives didn't want slavery to spread into the western states and they both did not want to force slavery upon northern states, they were fine with having slavery in the southern states. Where they differed was how they wanted to prevent the spread. Douglas wanted to use popular sovereignty where Lincoln wanted to forbid slavery in those territories.

    Lincoln was elected as the 16th president, winning against his running mate Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln most likely won for his views on how to stop the spread of slavery in the western states- forbidding it.

    Confederates opened fire on Fort Sumter because the union would not turn it over to them. The fort was a symbol of sovereignty, that's why the union wanted to take it down.

    The first major land battle between the armies of virginia and it basically was the starting point of the War. It was the union army against the confederates. The confederates broke the union’s right flank. This scared the North, making them realise that they would not win this war as easily as they thought they would.

    The first major battle of the civil war. It was the bloodiest day in american history with 22,717 casualties. The result of the war was inconclusive to who had won.
  • Harper’s Ferry

    Harper’s Ferry
    Harper's Ferry is a town where many battles and revolts took place. In 1859 John Brown attacked the arsenal in attempt to start an armed slave revolt. In 1862 Robert E. Lee split his army into 3 and attacked Harper's Ferry hoping to claim the garrison’s supplies and open a supply line back into Virginia.

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Written by Abraham Lincoln and declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the confederate states "are, and henceforward shall be free”. He most likely did this in hopes that slaves would break free from their masters and come to fight for the union. Although it didn’t end slavery throughout the whole nation, it still pushed forward the abolishment.

    It was a turning point for the war because it was the battle with the most casualties within the civil war. The Union won the battle and caused the confederate forces to pull back and stop attacking the north, that meaning the Union Won the Civil War
  • The Gettysburg Adress

    The Gettysburg Adress
    A speech given by Abraham Lincoln four months after the union beat the confederates in the Gettysburg battle. It was a very inspirational speech that touched on basic human rights and the Declaration of Independence.
  • Andersonville Prison

    Andersonville Prison
    Also known as Camp Sumter, this prison held more prisoners than any of the other confederate prisons. The south government could not provide enough food and needs for their federal captives so their was a divide between the prisoners. The prison stopped existing in April 1865 after the war ended.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Court House

    Surrender at Appomattox Court House
    This was one of the last battles of the Civil War and it was fought on April 9th. Lee was the commander of the Confederate Army and he surrendered after realizing that his army wasn’t able to break through the Union’s front. The signing of the document was a formal event between the parole, the officers and the men. This signaled to the end of the war.

    Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
    Abraham Lincoln was killed on April 15, 1865 in Washington, D.C by John Wilkes Booth. His reasoning was to avenge the cause of the Confederate States. This happened only days after the signing of the papers at the Appomattox Court House.

    Reconstruction

    This era was from 1865-1877 and it was a plan Lincoln came up with for the South after they had lost the war. Abraham was later assassinated so the new president Johnson continued his plans but added his own input. He required the Southern States to vow loyalty to the nation, and the abolishment of slavery so they could be readmitted to the Nation.
