Douglas new that the states would fight over if Kansas and Nebraska where free or slave states.Douglas though of Popular Sovereignty with allowed the people of the state to decide on if it would be a free or slave state

    both sides had were armed. 800 slavery supporters attacked the town of Lawrence they destroyed the Free State hotel and two newspaper offices.John Brown thought that he could end slavery. brown lead a group of people down the Pottawatomie creek where he seized and killed five people that where for slavery. Newspapers called Kansas bleed Kansas after this act.

    Douglas was not a popular as Lincoln. Lincoln challenged him in many debates. met seven times over the span of three months in 1858. the seven debates where all about slavery. Lincoln talked to Douglas about popular sovereignty. Douglas response about popular sovereignty pleased antislavery people but disliked in southern states. Douglas won a narrow victory against Lincoln on the election.

John Brown was hung for his actions. after johns death the nation was on the edge of a disaster.

    slavery split the Democratic party. north nominated Stephen Douglas ,and the south John C. Breckinridge. republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln. south was scared if Lincoln won it would encouraged slave revolt. Lincoln won because the democrats had to pic between two and republics only had one option .south debated the question of secession with is the withdraw from the union leaders in congress worked frantically to fashion a compromise.

James said that southern states had no right to leave the union in December of 1860. in his address Lincoln talked about seceding states directly mixed. he spoke tough but with kind words of piece.

If confederates kept the forts it would give them the right to secede (withdraw formally from membership in a federal union.) day after Lincoln went into office he got a message from the commander from fort Sumter saying that they where low on supplies. Confederates demanded that the people at fort Sumter would surrender. Lincoln sent messages to governor Francis Pickens from South Carolina saying he was sending a unarmed troop with supplies to the fort
