  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas and Nebraska both got to decide if they wanted to be a slave state or a free state. Anti-slavery voters in New England raised money to send many anti-slavery citizens to Kansas to make it become a free state. (Georgia: Its Heritage and Its Promise)
  • Union Blockade

    This was a strategy the Union used to cut off imports by blocking all Confederate ports. Union realized Atlanta would be a key target to hit when blockade runners would store their goods and supplies there. (Georgia: Its Heritage and Its Promised)
  • Battle of Chickamauga

    Lincoln wanted William Rosecrans to attack Chattanooga because he wanted to capture the important railroad junction located there. Union captured Chattanooga but after the Confederate victory, Rosecrans was replaced by Ulysses S. Grant who played a key role in the next invasion of Georgia. (Georgia Info)
  • Freedman's Bureau

    This was an agency that provide life necessities that helped poor whites and new freedmen adjust to their newly gained freedom. The North soon helped the South by sending money and sent teachers to help provide for the schools to educate African Americans. (Georgia: Its Heritage and Its Promise)
  • Slavery (official end)

    African Americans were shipped to the U.S back in 1619 to be used as slaves to do hard labors for many people in the south. Half a million slaves made up 40% of Georgia's population and 60% of these slaves worked with more than 20 slaves to produce more cash crops. (Georgia: Its Heritage and Its Promise)
  • Ku Klux Klan

    A white supremacist group that used violence to often intimidate African American communities, republican parties, or anyone deemed as an enemy. The KKK led to the "Camilla Riot" where African Americans were joining a Republican rally and were massacred by the whites that led Georgia to go under military rule and Radical Reconstruction again.
