  • Scott v. Sanford

    In a case were Dred scott sued because he was belived he was free from slavery, the suprmeme court said that slaves are not citizens therefore they did not have the righ to sue in court.

    After the civil war when america tried to rebuild and give afriican americans more rights but it ultimitly failed.

    Jim Crow era

    An era where americas racism was at its worst when culture and the arts used racist charters known as jim crow's and african americans were often segregated and not treated equally to whites.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    In this case, Plessy who was 7/8 Caucasian was asked to come to sit in the whites-only section of the train and when asked to leave he refused and was arrested. A supreme court case that coined the phrase "Separate but equal" which allowed segregation to continue but if it did what the blacks and whites got had to be equal. The court ruled in 7-1 for the state because it believed no meaningfull difference in the cars and they were equal therfore not violating the seperate but equal clause.

    This amendment made sure the government could not deny the right to vote based on sex. Therefore ending womens suffrage.

    Scottsboro boys

    A case where 9 boys were accused of violence and rape on a train in alabama no evidence was found of the rape but because of the racism in the south they were convicted anyway.
  • George stinney case

    This was one of the most unfair court cases of all time in which 14 year old black male george stinney was convicted for murder in 10 minuets.
  • Brown v. Board

    A case where the supreme court ruled that segregating white and black schools was unconstituional and that the seperate but equal cause was inherently un equal.
  • Civil rights act of 1964

    This act prohibits discrimination based on race sex color religion and national orgin.
  • Voting rights act

    This act removed all the obstacles that african american men had to follow to vote.
  • Civil rights act of 1968

    Also know as the fair housing act this made it more fair and easier for african americans to buy and sell houses.
  • California v. Bakke

    A case where a california college help 16 seats for black students at there college. Bakke sued because he belived that this violated the equal protection caluse and which it did because you can not use race as a sole factor in spreading diversity.
  • Gratz v. Bollinger

    In this case the supremem court ruled that gving 20 points to an underrepresented race at the university of michican was unconstitutional and violated the equal protection clause.
  • Meredith v. Jefferson Co Board

    where louisville tried to intergrate there schools soley based on race which was ruled unconstituitonal because parents couldent send there kids to the school they wanted too based on there race
  • Shelby County v. Holder

    A case that revised section 5 and section 4b from the voting act of 1965
