  • Jim Crow Laws

    Jim Crow Laws
    Established in the south after the Civil rights act of 1875 was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. The first laws seperated blacks from whites and were used to "keep the blacks in their place."
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy vs. Ferguson
    First major segregation case to go to court due to segregation on public transportation. Established the idea "seperate but equal" and became the first federally approved cases of segregation.

  • NAACP created

    NAACP created
    "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination"
  • Mendez v. Westminster

    Court case brought to the supreme court by a group of Mexican Americans challenging racial segregation in California Schools. Supreme court sided with Mendez and ended segregation in California.
  • Sit Ins

    Sit Ins
    First bagan as spontaneous resistance movements in Ohio later adopted and used in the south until the eventual passising of the Civil Rights act.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Ended Racial segregation in schools in a unanimous decision by the Supreme court.
  • Montgomery bus Boycott

    Montgomery bus Boycott
    Started as a result of Rosa Parks being arrested for sitting in the front of a segregated bus where Black people has to ride in the back of the bus. First coordinated effort by various agencies including Martin Luther Kings Southern Christion Leadership Confrence. Lasted until 1955. 1956 Supreme Court held it was unconstitutional to segregate buses.
  • Creation of the Southern Christian Leadership Confrence

    Creation of the Southern Christian Leadership Confrence
    The sclc was responsible for most of the peaceful marches throughout the south wand was led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr who based his resistance to hatred on the teaching of Ghandhi.
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    Major desegregation case following the Brown vs. Board of Education decision. President Eisenhower had to send in troops to protect the Little Rock 9.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    Buses of students and those that hated segregation would board buses and travel to south to march and participate in Sit ins risking everything including their lives.
