  • NAACP

  • Congress of Racial Equality

    This group supported nonviolence. It played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    This ruling declared the separation of white and black schools unconstitutional. Many southern states opposed this ruling and acted against it.
  • FICC bans segregation

    Federal Interstate Commerce Commission bans segregation on buses and trains. This was after Rosa Parks' stand
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was arrested
  • Southern Christian Leadership Conference

    They supported non violent action as a method of desegregation bus systems in the south. The struggled to gain footholds in black churches and communities.
  • Arkansas fights desegregation

    Arkansas' governor blocked 9 black students from going to a traditionally white school. President Eisenhower sent in federal troops to ensure compliance.
  • Freedom Rides

    The first freedom ride left on May 4th. Freedom riders were civil rights activists who rode buses into the south.
  • Military desegregated

    All military units are integrated. The only exception is the National Guard.
  • Medgar Evers killed

    He was killed shortly after JFK's speech supporting civil rights. He was a field secretary for the NAACP
  • 16th Street Baptist Church bombing

    This was in Birmingham Alabama. Four young girls were murdered
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    This outlawed discrimination against African Americans and women. It also ended segregation.

    They called for resistance to the recent desegregtion rulings. This was after Rose Park's stand and Brown v. Board of Education

    On this day Malcolm X was assassinated. He was an African American muslim, minister, and human rights activist.
  • Edward Brooke elected senator

    Edward Brooke was elected senator. Hr was the first black senator in 85 years.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    It provided equal housing opportunities regardless of race. It was signed into law by LBJ
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King

    On this day Martin Luther King was assassinated. He was killed my James Earl Ray.
