  • First Lunch Counter Sit In

    First Lunch Counter Sit In
    On February 1, 1960, four African American college students sat down at a lunch counter at Woolworth's in Greensboro, North Carolina, and politely asked for service. Their request was refused. When asked to leave, they remained in their seats.
  • Freedom Riders

    a series of political protests against segregation by blacks and whites who rode buses together through the American South in 1961. In 1946 the U.S. Supreme Court banned segregation in interstate bus travel.
