  • Executive Order 9981

    On July 26, 1948, President Truman issued an executive order which prohibited racial discrimination in the military.
  • Brown v. BoE

    In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that the segregation of public schools was unconstitutional.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for refusing to the sit in the back of a Montgomery bus. This began the Bus Boycott, which lead to the ruling that segregated buses were unconstitutional.
  • SCLC Founded

    In 1957, MLK Jr. establishes the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA.
  • Lunch Counter Sit-Ins

    Black college students begin to sit-in at a lunch counter which refuse to serve black customers.
  • March on Washington

    The March on Washington begins in 1963 with Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech.
  • 24th Amendment

    Ratified in 1964, the 24th amendment abolishes the poll tax.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
    This act outlaws discrimination based on color, race, and sex.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed by Lyndon B. Johnson. This act prohibits racial discrimination when voting.
  • Thurgood Marshall

    On October 2, 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in to the U.S. Supreme Court as the first black Supreme Court associate justice. Discrimination is coming to an end.
